This 4-piece Modular Sleep System (MSS) was designed for the U.S. military and is primarily used by the army and USMC. Using the components individually and in combination provides comfortable sleeping down to –30°F. Adding in some extreme weather clothing into the mix, it’s purported to accommodate down to –50°F — but that’s pretty extreme!

The bivy cover protects from wind, rain and snow even without a tent. That is just as important for your comfort as the insulation provided by the sleeping bags. And if you get some mud on anything, no worries as both sleeping bags and bivy cover are machine washable!

Military Modular Sleep System Components

  1. Patrol Sleeping Bag: For temperate weather 30 to 50°F.
  2. Intermediate Cold Weather Sleeping Bag: Alone (–10° to 30°F) or combined with the patrol bag for colder weather.
  3. Bivy Cover: Alone in warm weather or snapped over the patrol and/or cold weather sleeping bags as a barrier to wind, wet ground, rain, or snow.
  4. Compression Stuff Sack: Both sleeping bags and the bivy cover can be stuffed and compressed in this sack to a compact size.

Patrol Sleeping Bag

This mummy-style military sleeping bag is ideal for temperate weather between 30° and 50°F by itself. You can snap the cold weather sleeping bag inside it for more warmth. And you can snap the patrol bag inside the bivy cover to stay out of the wind and rain without a tent.

The heavy-duty, reversible zipper opens end to end. It has pulls on both ends so you can find the perfect ventilation at the top or bottom of the bag. You can also pull the zipper from inside or outside the bag for ease of use and exit. The slider is non-locking and will repair itself it jams or gets snagged. (Wish my winter parka did that!)

Bivy Cover

A bivy sack or cover protects your sleeping bag from wind, rain, snow, and wet ground. This one is generously sized so that it can enclose either bag or both at the same time. Attach the bivy cover by snap fasteners on either side of a sleeping bag’s slide fasteners. It can also be used alone in very warm weather.
