MRE Taste Test

MRE Taste Test

Posted by Eddie Schmidt on Dec 22nd 2014

I read a great article about civilian MREs on The Survivalist blog called ‘MRE Taste Test: Everything You Need to Know About Meals Ready to Eat’ by Tim MacWelch.

He points out that real “MREs are usually government property, and not for sale in the civilian world.” This is true and Billings Army Navy Surplus is one of the few places you can get the real deal. We only sell authentic military surplus MREs — no after market or civilian MREs here! Our inventory varies depending on what is available but they are either manufactured by Wornick, Ameriqual, or SoPakCo.

MacWelch also cautions about purchasing MREs on eBay or gun shows since you have no idea how long they’ve been stored or under what conditions. Our MREs are always kept in cool, dry, rodent-free storage until we ship them to you to maximize their shelf life.

In the early days, rations were comprised of slow spoiling foods like salted pork until canned food appeared as C Rations. Then over time our modern day MREs appeared in high tech retort pouches. Fortunately, MREs not only last longer than salt pork and canned goods (up to 5+ years), but they taste a lot better too. In fact, The General says they make a great Christmas dinner.

Ahem... Well personally, I think he spent too much time in combat. But, if I'm ever stranded in a whiteout blizzard in the middle of nowhere during Christmas, a gift wrapped MRE would be just what I wanted from Santa! The author conducted a taste test and thought some MREs were wonderful and others... well, not so much. Taste tests aside, MREs have the calories to keep you alive during emergencies. Hunger seems to make everything taste better!

If you want to do your own taste test or need to stock up on MREs for  emergency preparedness, we’ve got you covered.
