American Flag — Graffiti-Style

American Flag — Graffiti-Style

Posted by Eddie Schmidt on Sep 3rd 2015

There’s nothing more patriotic or fitting than an Army Navy store displaying the American flag. So we commissioned Underground Culture Krew do a flag mural on our shipping/receiving door.

We rent our extra building space to Tyson Middle, owner of Underground Culture Krew (aka UCK). Their art is a new twist on a traditional symbol. They specialize in legal graffiti which has become a huge genre across the U.S.

They did a great job and we’re very proud to be 'waving' the red, white and blue in such a huge way. Be sure to honk loudly and wave wildly to show your patriotism when you see it! Better yet, drop on in — you can visit us and give a big shout-out to the guys at UCK at the same time.

Here are a few words from Tyson Middle, owner of Underground Culture Krew:

Underground Culture Krew is an art gallery of like-minded artists dedicated to creating a safe and accepting environment for the development of all forms of artistic expression. Specializing in graffiti, street art, urban art, modern art, photography and art supplies. The goal of UCK is to create and develop a stimulating environment that reflects and enhances the city’s heritage, diversity, and character through public art.

Underground Culture Krew originally opened its doors on February 1st, 2013 at its first location on 3rd street. Shortly after being in business for only one year we had to begin to look for a larger location that offered more amenities. UCK was very fortunate to find its current location in the same building as Billings Army Navy Surplus on North 29th Street. It’s a great location that is much bigger and has a lot to offer the gallery.

Eddie Schmidt has been a great landlord and has been very accepting of what UCK is all about. Paint, public art, and gallery shows. Not too long ago, Eddie asked us to paint his shipping/receiving door with an American flag. The artist, Michael Martin (photo below), crushed the realistic style that Eddie wanted to achieve on the door. Feel free to check out the work, you can’t miss it on Montana Avenue!
